Soorarai Pottru is a 2020 emotional, inspiring biopic, written and directed by Sudha Kongara, starring Suriya and Aparna Balamurali in lead roles.
The core plot and a few scenes in Soorarai Pottru were inspired partly by the real-life story of Captain G.R. Gopinath – The founder of budget airline Deccan Air, and the book ‘Simply Fly’. Soorarai Pottru was highly anticipated and was discussed a lot on the delay in release and straight OTT release due to theatre shut down.
Soorarai Pottru unfolds the story of a dreamer Maara, who aims to introduce a budget airline for his society when all the other airlines had high charge and meant to be only for the wealthy community. Suriya as Nedumaaran Rajangam / Maara is the show-stealer here. He is one of the few who can easily portray any character with utmost perfection. Maara is a character whose life goes through all the emotions. When we have one of the best performers in the industry, there’s no need to look back! Suriya just pulled off the character with ease. We got the Suriya we were missing and badly wanted to see. Soorarai Pottru is nothing less than a mass comeback for him. The movie has filled with lots of emotional scenes. The scene at the airport, and followed by the shot with Urvashi at his home, Suriya’s top-notch performance made everyone’s heart bleed. Nadippin Nayagan for a reason!
Aparna Balamurali got the best debut in Tamil Cinema. With her performance in the movies like Maheshinte Prathikaaram, Sunday Holiday like Malayalam movies, Casting her for the character Bommi was indeed a right decision. Urvashi appears as Maara’s mother is another feather in cap casting. Always used to think why such an experienced and proven actress rarely appeared in movies. If we look back to her recent films, she is a gem and would like to see many more characters from her. So glad to see Paresh Rawal in the film. The director had only selected the talented performers for the movie, so as the casts, did a fabulous job in Soorarai Pottru.
The songs and background scores by G.V. Prakash is another big highlight of Soorarai Pottru. All the tracks were matching with the movie’s shade. The BGM was exceptional. Undoubtedly, a music director who is a valuable asset for any films. The cinematography and the editing of the movie were excellent, such a professional and outstanding work from Niketh Bommireddy and Sathish Suriya. As Soorarai Pottru plot is happening in the past timespan, the technical team of the movie made it look perfect. An applaud to the whole team of Soorarai Pottru.
Sudha Kongara is a director who knows A to Z of her movie. She exactly knows what works, where to hit, how it should be. Each and every directorial of her till date, we can see how brilliantly she made those movies. A director with 100% blockbuster rate, and is easily in the list of top 5 in Tamil cinema. Sudha has made the movie by putting the soul to it. The hard work, dedication, emotion and soul reflects in each tiny segment of Soorarai Pottru, and this is only possible with an excellent team.
It’s surprising, not a single unwanted scenes or lag in such a class movie.
Even though the movie only has positive things. There is a huge negative to say – We missed the best theatre experience. Can’t imagine the movie’s reach and records it would create if it got released on theatres. A re-release post lifting the restrictions will do the same.
Positives & Negatives
- Suriya as Maara
- Rest all the casts
- Story, Screenplay and Direction
- Dialogues
- Cinematography
- Songs and BGM
- Editing
- Missed Theatre Release 😛😔
