Ponmagal Vandhal Review - First Day Reports

Ponmagal Vandhal is a 2020 Tamil thriller, drama written and directed by J.J. Fredrick, starring Jyothika, Parthiban, Bhagyaraj, Prathap Pothen, Vidya Pradeep etc… Ponmagal Vandhal is a movie which started a new trend in Tamil cinema by directly releasing the movie in the OTT platform, as the theatres across the nation is closed due to the COVID pandemic. Obviously, the movie had got good views even on it’s first day of premiere in Amazon Prime Videos than the views that could have got if released in the theatres.

The movie talks about one of the serious issue or crime currently we are witnessing in our society. Jyothika, since her second entry, she had always focused on doing the movies which empowers women and gives a good message to the society. In Ponmagal Vandhal, she appears as Venba, a novice lawyer who reopens a case after 15 years where a women Jyothi who was accused for murdering a couple of men who were said to be rescuing a girl kidnapped by Jyothi. Jyothika was carrying the whole move in her shoulder as a lead cast. Her performance, especially those court scenes was amazing, it sounded hard and powerful. Even though the movie had many other star casts including Bhagyaraj, Prathap Pothen, Parthibhan like legends, they didn’t had much praiseworthy scenes in this movie.

The movie started well with a vision and many unsolved facts. As the movie goes on, the plot slowly evolved more serious with court interrogation scenes. The movie had a strong theme, but It’s doubtful that whether the execution was that perfect. Most of the twists and turns in the movie were almost predictable. More than the factual and impressive court cross examination scenes, the writer and the director of the movie more emphasized the emotional dialogues and plots. It felt removing few melodramatic scenes could have worked better for the movie.

Govind Vasantha, the 96 music director with his soulful music and instrument stunned everyone again. his songs and tones remained as a major plus for the movie. The cinematography by Ramji also deserves an appreciation. As a beginner, J.J. Fredrick did a good work. The movie is well directed and written. If the film was more focused on the core subject than the melodramatic scenes, also if the screenplay was little unpredictable, the movie would be a top notch court drama.

For the content and a good message which conveys to the society on the child and women abuse, the movie should be watched. Don’t miss to stream the movie in Amazon Prime Video.
