DOCTOR Review

Doctor is a 2021 Tamil, Comedy – Thriller, directed by Nelson Dilipkumar, starring Sivakarthikeyan, Priyanka Mohan, Yogi Babu and others. Doctor presents the story of a highly disciplined and mature individual named Varun (Sivakarthikeyan), who works as a doctor in the Indian Army. Because of his emotionless and highly disciplined nature, his fiancée Padmini (Priyanka Mohan) refused to marry him, so he returned to his home to convince them to approve the marriage. Priya’s niece got lost when she returned from school the same day. Varun, who was still outside their home, joined them on their search for their daughter. The movie then revolves around Varun’s attempt to rescue the kidnapped child and all the other children whom the same group kidnapped.

Although this is an action thriller, the movie is humorous all the way through. Much like Kolamavu Kokila, the plot of Doctor develops using dark humour. There are no forced comic scenes in the movie – instead, every scene is connected and natural. Yogi Babu, Deepa Shankar, Redin Kingsly are the main fun contributor to Doctor. Overall, this movie is quite entertaining. The sync between the star cast was the major plus of the film. The casting was perfect. 

Doctor is not your usual Sivakarthikeyan film. Sivakarthikeyan is known primarily for his one-liners, his screen presence, and his character emphasis. There are no punchy or one-liner dialogues in Doctor. He is subtle, very calm and silent throughout. One of the best entertainers played a role in which he was emotionless and strict. It was probably his most accomplished performance. Priyanka Mohan was stunning everyone with her cuteness and dialogues in her debut Tamil film, Tamil Cinema got a star heroine. Redin Kingsly as Bhagath had a significant role in the movie as he scored more than anyone else. The fun and counters he gave made the audience laugh, and his scenes with Yogi Babu was very entertaining. Yogi Babu as Prathap, as usual, was outstanding in the film. Rest all the people like Ilavarasu, Arun Alexander, Archana who are in the group of Varun did a perfect job. Vinay gives a fabulous performance as Terry, the villain in Doctor. His presence and tone were superb. Terry is an underpowered character, but Vinay delivered.

One of the heroes of Doctor is Anirudh Ravichander. Doctor is one of the best works of Anirudh. His BGM and the songs were the souls of the film – especially the climax classical BGM, the Chellamma song, and Nenjame BGM. The cinematography of the movie was marvellous, especially the Goa portion and the climax scene. The picturisation of the Chellamma song deserves a special mention. The movie was flawless in terms of editing as well. Technically, the film worked perfectly. It is evident, Nelson and the team put a lot of effort into the movie. Despite the familiar storyline, the screenplay and filmmaking made it an even better watch. Writing and directing humorous scenes in a film is a tricky task. The writer/director here has created a laugh riot with a whole thriller movie. The dark humour pattern is perfect here. Nelson Dilipkumar will be one of the leading experimental writers and directors in the future. He perfectly understands how audiences will react, and he has mastered the art of balancing realistic and cinematic writing. Doctor stands above Kolamavu Kokila in terms of entertainment and filmmaking. It will be intriguing to see what he will come up with next in Beast with a top entertainer and superstar like Thalapathy Vijay.

Doctor is a perfect movie to enjoy with your family and friends. The film offers a lot of fun.
