Chhapaak is a 2019 classic, survival, autobiography Bollywood movie based on the real life incident of an acid attack survivor Laxmi Agarwal. The movie is directed by Meghna Gulzar, starring Deepika Padukone, Vishal Dahiya, Vikrant Massy, Madhurjeet Sarghi and many others.
Chhapaak talks about the story of Malti, who became an acid victim by her boyfriend Basheer. The movie portrays the pain, struggle she possess to survive from the acid attack and in this society. Deepika Padukone was a right and precious choice to act as Malti. She well handled the character, which has huge acting potentials. We were able to see all the emotions, helplessness, depression, pain, from her acting. We never saw Deepika onscreen, what we were witnessing was Malti. When Malti looks in the mirror for the first time after the incident, Deepika scored in those scenes. Deepika Padukone amazed us all and delivered a huge comeback after her break.
Vishal Dahiya as the boyfriend Basheer, Madhurjeet Sarghi as Archana Bajaj and Vikrant Massey as Amol did their characters with at most perfection. These characters was necessary for the movie to develop and the depth of the characters was chance less. Their combination scenes with Deepika worked out well and their chemistry was good. The other casts also did their part very well.
The main highlight and success of the movie is, this is not your regular Bollywood movie, Chhapaak is so natural and not even a single scene is exaggerated. The movie maintained it’s feel and momentum throughout. It was a good decision to not give over sympathy or sentiments for the character Malti, instead portrayed her as a fighter, a confident survivor. The director Meghna Gulzar delivered a neat, different and a classic movie . As the movie is based on true incidents, it’s good that the movie stick on to the original incidents and gave respect to the victims by not getting deviated from the topic and telling the message directly and in a right way.
The movie is shot well and technically perfect. All the departments especially the Cinematography, Music, Editing, Visual Effects team deserves an applause.
We saw some movies and characters on acid victims from South, in the movies like Uyare and Bigil. But Chhapaak is the best in this genre as it delivered the message strongly. Don’t miss the movie and the performance of Deepika Padukone.
Positives and Negatives
- Deepika Padukone
- The acting of all the casts
- Story, Screenplay and Dialogues
- Direction of Meghna Gulzar
- Cinematography and Editing
- All the other departments
- The duration could have been little trimmed

Review : A must watch inspiring and emotional movie. Deepika Padukone as Malti will be one of the strong and best characters in Bollywood. Chhapaak is a message to all those ones who consider women as a weak and slave. They aren’t, they are strong enough to change your life forever. A message that’s well delivered. Hats off to the Chhapaak team and the real life victims.
